Can anyone tell me how this hole is made?

I want to renew some posts and rails. The rails are tapered and sit in the holes. On the middles post the hole goes thru the whole post.

( chainsaw seems a bit brutal and risky)

Could have been chiseled or machined out with a mortice drill. Mortice drills are still widely used but more oft used these days, are routers.

Usually a chain mortiser a big drill bit and chisel would be a cheaper option but will take a lot more time it may be possible to hire a chain mortiser no idea of cost thougj

chain mortiser, my local fencing supplier uses one for mortising post for arris rails

Managed to get the holes done with drills and chisel, didn't turn out too bad.

Luckily the rails fill the holes, so it covers the rough bits

Looks like that one was made with a router. The curved corners are the telling ellement. Alternatively they may have used a forstner bit to drill the majority out and then use a chisel to clean up
