Securing a speed line

What different ways do people secure a speed line to the ground end? On both hard and soft surfaces.

Depends on the size of the lumps being zipped down. A groundy, a pile of logs, the chipper, a tree. As long as they are suitable for purpose. You would be amazed how good a pile of logs is as an anchor though.

Fairly good idea, saves damaging the customers lawn too. I would get a groundy to just hold it for lighter branches. I'm talking about the heavier chunks...

Probably frowned upon now, but a deadman anchor in a manhole used to be a commonly used anchorage for winching in the old days.

A tow hitch on a 4x4 can be good or concrete/granite post if your lucky, I've never had the occasion for a 'soft' anchor and I suppose you cant tie to thin air so mmm not sure on the soft side

Drive a steel bar at an angle into the ground.

I've used three angle iron lengths, hammered in a V configuration then tensioned together with rope, as an anchor to winch a tracked chipper up and down a ridiculous slope. That worked really well

Tow hitch, couple of groundies or a metal spike hammered into the ground at a slight angle. I definitely wouldn't risk tying to a concrete post, they're very prone to snapping. There is a way of doubling the rope back on itself and securing/tensioning it with a prussic so that when the piece reaches it, the contact with the prussic gently collapses the system and the load lands safely in a pre-determined spot rather than crashing into the vehicle/chipper/groundie etc..

We use a Petzl Pro Traxion to tighten and release the line, works a treat,

On this particular job I used 6-7 road pins and drove them a long way into the ground into the ground. Worked well with the limbs, but the timber began to bend them so we changed to snatch and pull line.

Obviously in this scenario we also used a control line in case the makeshift ground anchor were to fail.
