Killing grass?

Dont cut it down short, down to 6" if you have too and remove cuttings before treating or you will shield the target. If you cut it too low you will have to let it regrow as again no target

If you do decide to cut it as short as possible, it's best to wait a week or so after for it to recover. Fresh green growth absorbs the chemical much better.

From then on, it'll be ok to cover after 3 days (minimum).

This is assuming it's a good quality chemical and good coverage!!!

Regards.

Thanks guys, maybe my spring eagerness to cut it can be saved for the back garden then 😜 don't want to work to hard at home.

The watering can sounds a good idea, any ideas how long it will take to die off? I'm going to cut it down as short as possible before hand then hoping to spray it and get it covered up ASAP with chip

How long is the grass now? If less than 6" I would spray it first (with watering can) then you can cut it a week later. The chemical will then be down in the roots and it will kill it. If any bits have been missed and manage to grow through the chip just water this bits later. As said this chemical works best when weeds growing fast and enough leaf to absorb it well. Needs about 6 hours dry weather but adding a little fairy liquid helps to break down the surface tension and ensures good coverage which helps.

Not tree related I know but figured some of you guys would have the knowledge.

I currently use my front garden to park on and I now need to kill the grass and replace with chip, I know the best way is to dig it off but my back won't let me do that.

I have read of using vinegar and sheeting it over with black plastic but I'm after something a little quicker if possible?

Thanks

If your replacing it with chip are you putting down a weed membrane (black plastic sheeting) ? if so why bother spraying with weedkiller? the grass and weeds wont grow without sunlight.

I would recommend against the cutting down of turf area as short as possible since this act will defeat the purpose of the job your attempting to accomplish.

Leaving as much surface area as possible for the material to coat is key to the act of smothering the turf to death. Another tip I would suggest would be adding 1 ted spoon of dishwashing liquid per gal of H2o with your herbicide.

This surfacant will increase the smothering ability of the herbicide and lead to a faster kill off of the turf.

On the other hand if your really in a hurry to get this job done have you considered a sod or turf cutter from a rental company?, not a manual model either. Based on the area in question you may find it cheaper and far faster than any chemical means if time is that important.

It's a little longer than that I'd say so will give it a little trim and a few days to refresh, then spray it over.

Mix a little fairy in with the killer/water mix yeah?

Thanks, I considered a cutter but I'm tending towards spraying and cover it as the areas around 7x4m and I need to do it as quick and easily as possible. I. Thinking once the chip has been down a while the light not reaching the grass will sort it.

Agreed, however what ever Man has created nature has countered every time.

Weed seeds can and will root and sprout on top on any weed membrane or plastic on the market in time. Even if you use a pre emergent before mulch is applied the affects of this product will soon wear thin if not repeated on a regular cycle.

Shoot. I can have the whole area cut and raked out clean in maybe 3 hours if I work really slow:sneaky2:. Wish I was closer, I could make an example out of that area PDQ. BTW, you will have to continue to treat with some sort of herbicide going forward depending on the depth of the wood chip and surrounding vegetative material creeping in to chipped area.

Take care.

Yeah just a few drops in each can. At 7x4 M you should only need 1 or at most 2 cans but if you walk slow and need more then just add less chemical to each can. You could see how far one can goes at YOUR watering pace then add 1ml for every 2 m square and a couple of drops of fairy. Jobs a goodun
