I make mine out of Spruce and they work really well. I must just be better at it than you.

Have you tried softwood before? When I made a softwood one it just smoked and smouldered. Made plenty out of ash and they work a treat.

I've made most of mine out of dry stuff, but if it was green you could just cut your slots and then put it in the house for a day or two. She'd burn then.
