Arboriculture in Spain

Hi guys

 

I wonder if any of you can help?

 

I am currently studying level 4 arb, originally with a view to going into tree officer work or consultancy. Due to family commitments I am going to have to move to Spain, Costa Blanca at the end of my course.

I have tried to find out some info on arb careers in Spain but would love to know if anyone has any actual experience of arboriculture in this region of Spain.

 

I have to admit to being at the beginning of my search so I can probably find out a lot of info with some googling, but here seemed like the obvious place to turn

The region is covered in stumpy growth and stumpy trees. Mostly orange, lemon and olive groves. You see bigger trees in towns but you never see people working on them. There must be arbor teams and consultancy work. But the only time you see a chainsaw, is when a grove owner has decided to flatten a grove for development or is cutting firewood.

 

If you do end up working in the field, be it cutting of consultancy. Remember that most of Spain's plant life, is either prickly or spiny. Trousers don't last long while walking in the countryside.

Level 4 qualification Arb officer ? , thats a little over qualified for the UK, are you sure that in Spain it would really trump you up, if its anything to go by in this country its more to do with in house politics as to who gets those jobs, more line management shuffle, rather than some hapless council office worker loose there job by cutbacks in a worthless department , don't they just ask them to , whats the term ? ... consider becoming an arb officer why don't you.

Spain Unemployment

 

I do read that age group 18-35 has a 35% unemployment especially in rural areas.

Thanks for the positive replies guys It's not an ideal situation

 

I don't really have a choice about going to Spain or which region I go to as I am going to look after my partner's elderly parents out there. I do know the region fairly well, landscape wise and yes ... the trees are unexciting. I took the level 4 to work here in the UK but circumstances change and I don't want to throw away that time and money spent on the course only to end up working in a bar

Spain is starting to protect its trees now, for instance Carob can't be felled and there are laws covering the removal of pine on mountainside areas ... albeit that you can't cut the last one down .....

 

I'm currently investigating Valencia's parks and gardens through their council but my limited Spanish (which is slowly getting better) is a hinderance I have to admit.

 

As for Lvl 4 being over qualified for tree officer work ... you need a lvl 3 to become an assistant officer these days.

Not sure it's much help, but it could be fun for a climber....i was told last year by a Spaniard that she wanted to become a climber because they're always looking for people to work on Sweet Chestnuts...mainly for harvest time I imagine. Could be worth exploring...?

spend a lot of time in Spain (great Birds!) but tend to put the blinkers on tree wise - lots of Eucalyptus and tall standing road trees, some superb town planting but on the whole from what Ive seen - the question how do they manage is simple - they don't!

 

Also the economy fell out of its arse in the 80/90's bad deals and too many golf courses,it could get quite depressing...
