Very cold weather coming next week ?

barely a dusting here, lil below freezing but hey its jan thats how its meant to be.

 

week or so ago was worse, we had perfect weather combination for misery, sleet and rain in night and early am and then it froze - was a once in every few years event.

 

whole estate i work on was shining like glass, four wheel drive was just coping and no more if driven with care.

Could do with some snow to get it moving again it's died off this week 3 cube tomorrow 2.7 sat. I'm not holding my breath

 

 

It's still looking cold next week on the forecast combined with wind and moisture I think it will be prolonged enough and cold enough to get things moving. Bit of white stuff gets peopl thinking it's actually winter.

Interesting times!

Kind of a locked in pattern too?( as opposed to usual Northerly spells that are short lived as "topplers" introduce milder US eastern seaboard/atlantic maritime air)

Mid atlantic ridging (higher pressure blocking of gulf stream to our parts) is helping influence a more polar maritime flow (northerly cored air) from the low pressures situated over & between the areas of Iceland, W Norway, N Sco etc.

Its a question of the the jet stream powering up less amplified or mid-atlantic heights Between 50-70 degree lats holding off milder zonal conditions, the former looking most likely as things stand so merging longer wintry showers and overnight ice & frosts widespread, moreso the further North & West you are plus altitude as always.

Will feel much colder thru saturday also as winds veer to a more Northerly from A NW direction bringing colder uppers with added threat of a "sliding" low tracking SE with prolonged rain, sleet or snow dependant on path & wether your east or west of said feature?

It's January. Over the next 5 days it's forecaste to have a low of -1c in Nottingham. We used to call that winter (sub-species mild). I know firewood suppliers pray for bad weather to sell more wood but when did a frosty windscreen in January become big news?

Since the weather went so mild for 2 years. People have forgotten already what proper winter is. I can remember in 2010 stepping outside and thinking stuff that and finding stuff indoors to do and that went on for weeks.

Down South maybe, I'm not seeing any consistent predictions for around here beyond next week (which is becoming milder). Where are you seeing the big freeze coming from?
