monkey puzzle puzzle

Hi all,

I am milling a large monkey puzzle tomorrow, 3 lumps at 10ft long each over the 30 ft it tapers from 3ft 6" to 2ft 6". im not sure what it will get used for, any advice on what thickness i should mill it? if it can be milled too thin or thick and have problems drying? it has started to go a little brown around 12" across the middle of the heart on biggest section but is still solid.

I am not sure what it is goin to be used for, most likely table tops, window cills and anything else i could persuade people to buy it for!!!!

If it's wet timber, then don't do boards, they will look amazing then split and worp.

If just wanting to mill, try big beams.

Or to make good use.

Stand them on their end on a pallet and cover the top and air dry for years then you can mill them into boards.

Hmm, don't think I'll put a blade through them until I have a bit more info on how to get the best quality boards. I'll take some photos of logs and post them later

above / below are photos of the 3 smaller sections of monkey puzzle. the biggest bit is still on site, it must be about 2 tonne as my tractor wont offer to lift it and will will manage 1.5 tonne not too bad.

the diameter of the 3 sticks i have out are as follows, dont think they were as big as i remember....

2'10" - 2'7"

2'4" - 2'3"

2'3" - 1'10"

any advice on how best to cut it so timber is not wasted would be much appreciated, if it has to be cut into a big block and dry for some time, so be it, how much time etc.

i wouldn't bother with the top log as it will split as others have said. the other two wold probably be ok to mill now in to boards as they have less knots and should survive as boards.

Did you get any of the nuts from it? They're meant to be better than pine nuts!!

tree was on a clients property, a local company came in, dropped it and cleared up, I moved the big bits so no nuts about unfortunately.

 

What sort of uses will people want monkey for? wondering what thicknesses to mill it into? any suggestions?
