Wood oil/stain

Although not very environmentally friendly at all everyone over here uses old engine oil from their tractors to preserve the timbers of their barns. Gives it a lovley deep grey colouring that looks quite natural and of course preserves the timber.......

Not sure mother nature is to keen on it though :(

no oil will stop greying it may just take longer.leave it over the summer then apply in the autumn and you should get plenty of grey colour if it's facing the sun.

Ok thanks would the wood still be protected enough if the oil is applied later? would you use tung oil or osmo? i don't really want a gloss finish either.

Hi, if you buy a gallon of good quality pure tung oil, which is, [or should be ] the main constituent of all the named products, you won`t go wrong, it`ll make up into at least double when thinned, it`s well worth having on the shelf and is a joy to work with. imo. cheers.

Aye and try it with real turps rather than the usual shite :thumbup1:

Sorry do you mean oil will stop greying completely or just prevent it from going grey as quickly?

Cheers! James
