Depends on the job.

I've got a customer in London who's happy to pay the £150 extra for travel on a half day job. I take the wife and kids, drop them off at a tube station, do some work and join them.

Gets us a free day trip to London.

Travel time is the deciding factor, over 1 hour begins to make it unworthwhile as there is not time to get work done.

Would you not just leave earlier and leave later alowing all of the usable day light hours to be worked?

How far out of your local area would you travel for a 1 day job and still be able to compete with your competition ?

I'm in Colchester, and I reckon I do at least one, often two or three jobs in London or north Kent each month. Even with my extra travel and time, the job price is about equal to those who live in London and have higher costs to start with. So if you have the availability or come recommended, the client pays little if any more for the job; and I spend just as many hours working in the day, only a bit more of them are spent in a car listening to tunes - which isn't a bad thing. It's my only time alone with nothing to do but think! I quite like it...

A few years back I went from Durham to Ealing Broadway in London to Dismantle three trees. Took two days but the money was excellent and we got a tip and an extra job on the way back...it took a very long time to get there and back but it was a lot of fun and it adds diversity to your work.i have been offered a weeks work in France in the Spring and I shall be driving there also.It all adds to your experience and pushes you.
