Trees in the countryside

Silly question maybe but all of my work is usually domestic where I'm familiar with legal status of trees.

I've been approached by a smallholder who has 3 large chestnut trees in a field and an Ash in the hedgerow that they want removed. There is nothing wrong with the trees. It is the landowners decision that he just wants rid of them. Whilst i'm not keen on felling healthy trees for the sake of it if I don't then it is only business going elsewhere.

The owner seemed to think there was some general prohibition against removing trees in the countryside and that they could only be pollarded. Not something I have heard of but just wanted some advice.

Cheers

The law does state that only so many trees over a certain size can be removed in any three month period- that three months runs jan, feb, March then starts again in April, May june, then again in July aug sep then again in October nov dec.

Miss a 3 month and there is no carry over. Worth checking on the law on felling large trees as it is a certain amount

Correct and size doesn't come into it, even if you are felling >5m3 of coppice, you still need a felling licence.
