Poor soils' date=' we are not feeding the soil anywhere near enough as we should which has s huge consequence to the life and cycles in the soil, many farmers just replace the bare minimum they need too N P K etc situations like this just show how unsustainable agriculture is. If only there was a simple solution[/quote']

There is a solution. Recycling organic based food manufacturing waste back to land. We import huge amounts of food / organic matter into this country yet for decades it's been going into landfill. With ever scarcer sources of soil nutrients these tips will become vital sources of N, P and K in the future and as for the sewage sludge that's gone out to sea or been buried that's another massive loss of resources. Problem is recycling all these " wastes " is very smelly and anti social however long term it's the answer. Just need the public to support it and the farmers to farm the land like they will live forever not like they've stolen it !!

I don't think an increase in landfill waste is the major cause of a decrease in gulls following the plough. The gulls would go for landfill as well as farmland, not instead of it, and probably increase their numbers accordingly.

BTW, I agree that some way has to be found of putting organic matter back onto the land. But do it wrong and it ends up running off into the watercourses and causing eutrophication and subsequent harm to wildlife in rivers.
