Go onto old os maps (find via google) and you will find 1:2500 maps with acreage on them. Very accurate as modern OS maps are from them.

Not sure how accurate that is I have just tried it on my wood and gained 5 acres. I am sure that is not tbe case. Only sure way to check is to measurd it

Now big is your wood? It wouldn't take much of a deviation from the set boundries to get that sort of gain on 100 acres.

MAGIC Maps also has a tool for measuring areas and perimeters which works well. I've found that boundaries can be quite difficult to identify accurately on Google.

That gives me a fractionally smaller area than the map developers one. But I find the map developers one easier to use as you can search by postcode!

I figured out how to use it and have now double checked the acreage - Planimeter gives me a little under 5.2 acres - good news :thumb up:

 

I guess that means I have roughly five acres to manage instead of my initial estimate of two - happy days :big grin:

Now comes the thinking bit. I'm quite happy to take my time and get lots of opinions before I actually do anything. Bren has advised me to divide the wood into sections then tackle one at a time. I'm thinking five plots of around an acre each would make it manageable. Bren's also positively identified those leylandi. The first plot I start work on will most likely have those in and they are almost certainly coming down. When I have a managemet plan organised I need to run it past the family - as its Grandads legacy I can't really go chopping anything down until all concerned are agreed. I'm hoping tha won't be a problem. We will see.
