Value of milled timber

se7enthdevil tends to get timber at a very low price, so you can get a bit more than that for it. I find that in my area, I'm quite cheap (possibly why Steve sometimes buys timber from me!).

If you don't have a kiln, it will limit your market. Kilns are simple to build - I've posted a thread here on Arbtalk about how to build one.

Regarding prices per cube, this is what I tend to charge on average. First price is green, the second kiln dried. Air dried would be somewhere in the middle.

Oak: £18/38

Beech: £10/22

Sycamore: £12/28

Elm: £15/35

Ash: £12/26

Douglas fir: £8/14

Larch: £7/14

Spruce: £7/13

I'm VAT registered, so all those prices would be plus VAT.

I sell very small quantities, and am in no rush. I don't have a kiln so I sell green or air-dried. Air-dried prices depend a lot on how long it has been drying, as if it is 10yrs+ it can be more than kiln dried, but for fairly thick section that has only had a year or two I would still treat it as green. Green prices would be:

Oak: £20

Other 'decent' hardwoods (e.g. ash, beech, sycamore etc): £15

Standard softwoods (spruce, pine, larch): £10

I don't need to add VAT to these, so the prices are pretty comparable to Jonathan's.

Some more desirable species command higher prices. These include walnut and most fruitwoods. Fruitwoods in particular tend to be in small sizes which are fiddly to saw, and some such as pear are extremely hard.

those prices are better than most timber yards to be fair.

i do tend to try my best at getting a cheap price if i can but that usually means buying in bulk. 2 or 3 cubic meters at a time gets a good price...

i should point out min is not top grade joinery as i only need it for skittles so just need a solid bit of wood rather than an unblemished one.

I export timber from here in Croatia to the UK so not sure if my prices will be relevant at all......

I sell minimum 2 cubic metres per order and prices given are for air dried stock, 1st & 1st/2nd class. Delivery included in that price

Oak : £600 - £700 per cubic metre £17 - 20 per cubic foot

Beech: £500 - £600 per cubic metre £14.5 - 17 per cubic foot

Cherry: £500 - £600 per cubic metre £14.5 - 17 per cubic foot

Walnut: £600 - £700 per cubic metre £17 - 20 per cubic foot

Prices do vary depending on where I source it and in what quantity.

To be honest most of my business revolves around reclaimed Oak for which I can get better prices then for new sawn dried stock.

In the UK I used to buy Kiln dried Oak 27mm for £24 per cubic foot and 50mm for £28. First class, pippy or character all the same price. I did buy a lot though.
