help pick a reliable second hand saw

I bought a secondhand 266xp last year and it's been terrific. Starts very easily, runs well, cuts everything I've thrown at it with ease, looks extremely simple to sort if anything does go wrong, and parts seem plentiful.

Not suggesting that any of the full time tree men would want to swap their 560's for it but by the same token I'd have no need or desire for the added complication that comes with a 560.

Against that when you buy something new it'll always be new to you, a new "old school" saw may be the way to go.

What other second hand saws should I be considering. I was hoping £300 would sort me but if not I'd rather buy once

Push your budged to £350 and you will get a brand new Makita 50cc with 18inch bar. Is that a bih enough saw for you? (Shavey on here may be able to do you similar price for the Dolmar version).

I've been doing a bit more research and I think I've narrowed it down to a 346xp 357xp ms260 and ms280. Whichever comes up first in good condition. I'm guessing about £300

The MS280 are a bit rare, the rest are extremely popular and that is a good thing for parts supply.

The 346XP is a cracking saw, lots of revs, the 357XP is a bit heavier but similar to the 346 but will handle bigger wood.

The MS260 shares many parts with the 024/236/MS240......I find them a bit slow compared to the Huskies but they are reliable workhorses and generally robust.

Ask Spud about my 357xp... got a non runner for £100, sent it his way and after fixing, porting, muffler mod, and 6 hours of cleaning, I got an animal back in the post. I think all told it was within your budget too, give or take a few quid. That said it would depend on the state of the non runner :)

My father has a stihl 041av. He's had it from new and its never needed anything. The bolts came loose in exhaust last week and broke a lug off. I repaired it for him but or dealer said that you can no longer get parts for them. I now want my own saw because if something else happens his saw ill not be fit to listen to him.

What reliable second or new saw should I replace it with. All the new saws seem very low powered now and I'm reading stories on here about all sorts of problems with saws. It sounds like they are scrap compared to what they used to be

Would a 357xp be a good saw. They still seem pretty expensive

I don't know what data you've been comparing but the 041 is nowhere near the power of modern saws! The same sided ports lowered the power output but increased (slightly) of the saw, whilst the max rpm is a slow 11k rpm!

The 162, 262, 357, 362 and 560 all run rings round it, with the 560 as king, the Stihl equivalent saws are the 034, 036, 340, 360, 341, 361 and 362, also capable of running rings round it!

Those are the size equivalents, although the power equivalents are 50cc saws!
