Root ball.

I've been helping a friend now and then on a landscaping job and it got to part where the trees were needed. The customer ordered a few pleached hornbeams and they came with sack and wire round the root balls. The root balls looked a good size but when we took the sack and wire off to plant we were left with this

I've not planted trees before so not seen what they should look like but these look as though they have just been hacked!

 

Is this what you'd expect?

That's what they all look like, but next time leave the hessian and wire on as it is full of fine soil to give the tree a good start. It eventually rots off in a few years. No harm to the tree.

Your not supposed to remove the wire and hessian it will breakdown over time. As long as there is some fibrous root within the rootball the tree should be fine.

yep. had worse, ordered some portugese laurel from italy £90+ each, just had single stump of root on some of them. Think it was their idea of undercutting in the nursery!

I have never touched the root ball, the wire rusts away in a season along with the hessian.

You shouldn't have taken the sacking of,just place in position as they come and cut the wire when in place. So don't be surprised if they don't take now you have compromised the root ball.

Taking the hessian and wire of is definitely a no no. And as said either cut or leave the wire. Only cut the wire when root ball in position.
