Had similar sort of issues with my small stihls ..

The one 171 would idle fine, cut fine with plenty of power but it had no 'pick up', I'd have to very slowly throttle it up otherwise it'd cut out, other than that it was totally fine ..

Other one I've got just does it when first firing it up and once it's hot then no bother at all.

thanks all I really appreciate the help. I think there are too many possibilities. I'm gonna put it on Ebay with a description of the fault & see what it makes. Time to go over to Husky for eve my smaller saws.....which one would you recommend that's a similar size to the Stihl, but is a Pro Huskey?

That saw doesn't exist does it ? Small pro Husqvarna saws are 50cc, even something like a 545 would be a lot more money and saw. Something like a 435 would possibly be the equivalent but is a 40cc and is physically bigger than a 181.

My first instinct is the fuel line needs replacing as they can go soft in time and they collapse in on themselves if its not a tank vent or carb issue.
