Can someone explain what the situation is about paying VAT on PPE?

 

Boot s no, trousers yes, complete helmet set no, visor on it's own yes, gloves sometimes...

 

What is the law? How does it work? How can I avoid it?!!!!!

Click on the above link from the vat people it says boots, complete hats yesbut only if you are buying for yourself!! This is rubbish when as an employer you are meant to provide PPE??? we need more help.

Trousers are specific to our industry but "workboots" is a more general thing that everybody needs for work, so were made vat exempt a long time ago. I think. Same with helmets I guess.

Remember there is vat on all items if you are buying for employees. Its only when you buy boots/helmet for yourself that vat is exempt.

The way round this actualy- is to get the shop to sell you a ridiculously priced helmet ( say £150 ) and get a complimentary pair of saw trousers -free :)
