We have a specific fencing tool like a graft for roots it has a solid shaft with a ball on the top and a narrow very sharp tip will post a pic of it tommorow.

Another tip is to fill a graft handle with cement helps with the extra weight.

I normally just use loppers or think screwfix do a thing called the mutt pro or something like that. Have you an old pair of ratcheting loppers you could try?

Portable reciprocating saw? After initial outlay blades are fairly cheap and come in various lengths.

Cheers

I use a Makita cordless for the small roots, its the big ones deep down that are the problem, not saying their impossible to remove, its just that as you get older you start looking at ways of making life a bit easier.

Roughneck do a range of scrapers or 6ft poles with sharp edges available everywhere (also at Screwfix hahaha), I use the 17lb hole digger, most roots can be got rid of using just its own weight.

I know what you mean when the hole falls right next to and Oak though, possible Semtex?
