Very big wasp?

Some quite big wasps keep finding their way into the light in my living room and buzzing a baritone buzz when they're there.

There's two or three there and one or two that fly on and off.

If it was a queen I'd not expect more than one?

It doesn't look like hornets as there's none of the reddish colour.

But they're far bigger than normal wasps?

Some pics of two I just got out of there on graph paper (2-10-20 mm) beside a normal wasp.

We've had loads of them in the house over the last couple of weeks as there is a nest in the roof which I hadn't bothered to do anything with as it wasn't causing me any nuisance. Apparently wasp nests produce loads of queens at this time of year, and they all leave the nest and look for somewhere to hibernate until next year, when the survivors start their own nests. I've just been up the ladders with the waspy night night dust as we have really been inundated!
