If you fit the large spline sprocket to the 550 you would have to change the oil pump drive gear as this is driven off the back of the spline, so the opening in the gear has to be larger.

 

How can you fit a " large " spline sprocket to a 550 if the splines on he crankshaft end are the small size ?

Yes, 9 tooth only fits the larger drums, add 2 links to the chain. Chain speed is 27m/s. It's the set up on my 560!

Although 8t 3/8 is faster (29m/s).

 

What pitch did you use on 3/8" chain in those maths? :sneaky2:

 

 

Also, the speed at WOT out of wood will of course be much higher, and in the wood it will vary over a wide range, so it is just theory to calculate at a set rpm. I'm sure you know this, but someone that doesn't may read the posts here.

So far in all experimentation I've done with gearing up a saw I've found myself going back to using the standard set up ie. going for torque over increased chain speed....

 

 

But that's me personally - it's one of those if it works for you then fair enough!
