I've a customer wanting to buy a Silver Birch for planting, he wants it around 10 to 12 ft.

Rather than pay Garden Centre prices, anyone know of who I could refer him to?

Ideally it would be delivered. Site is in Lincolnshire.

Rowan drop berries even messier! A birch is a more reliable tree for different soils and situations, Rowan go cankerous, suffer dieback etc.

Probably a sentimental reason for birch, but you could always plant a more distinctive tree.

Personally I would get a small 6ft one and watch it go. Resolves transport issue. It probably will outgrow a bigger planted specimen. Also if customer waits 8 weeks then get a cheaper bareroot plant.

I reckon I could get the pot grown for £70 in the size spec wanted then delivery on top.

Not if the Starlings, Blackbirds and Redwings spot them  I have a little Rowan as well and the birds love it. Our Birch split into 4 trunks earlier and I have taken 3 of them down, it's grown over thirty feet tall in twenty five years.

+1

We stuck in a few bigger silver birch and all of them ended up being reduced back to 6ft as their roots weren't strong enough to support them and even when we braced them with stakes they didn't like it. I'd stick some 6ft ones in over this winter, stake them well and next year they will take off.
