Hi, I apologise yet again if this is already been answered or whether what I'm asking is not possible without 3 or 4 assessments and a grand or two or what have you.

Spent the afternoon googling the shiz out of life but since its changed to from chapter 8 to 12a/b/c/d I am lost.

I am a self employed guy doing my own thang, and have got by so far with just sticking out some home made tree cutting signs on the back lane etc where we have been working (I love in rural devon)

I would like to buy the full chapter 8 road signs kit, but also go through the correct training so that I would be allowed to set it all out legitely for temporary work on lanes etc, B roads would be the busiest road (worst case scenario)

whilst googling most of the things I found was for people working on motorways and A roads, and couldn't find anything for your average joe, jonny quick wannabe.

what do I need to do to be able to put out my own signs for myself, and how much does it roughly cost?

cheers boys, Ben

You will need to take the signing, lighting and guarding qualification (Unit 2). This will explain what signage you will require and where you be required to put it - for all types of roads!

Thats the one, one day course snd only about 200 quid. Sending my lad on it soon.

i did mine with county council and did not need chapter 8 as not working on A roads i had two men at work signs 30mtrs from work area each side of road and cones around work area to keep people safe.

ask your insurance company what they want to cover you. and get it in writing. ask your local county highways if they would be willing to do a course with you allways doing it for theres and sub contrators who work for them. you pay your council tax

I think, and I'm willing to be corrected, that signing, lighting and guarding is all part of a legislative framework and is therefore a legal requirement regardless of which type of road if it is public highway. 2x M@W and some signs doesn't comply and so the contractor would be at fault if there was an incident.
