looking for a piston and rings and crank seals for an old 42 theres a meteor piston on ebay its 42 mm but we are unsure which one it will be open skirt or closed skirt any pointers chaps cheers

Not sure which of the pistons you'd want but as far as I've seen, the 42's were open ported cylinders and the 242's were closed if that helps with which style of piston it should have?

Did a 242 recently and it needed an open windowed piston as the transfers were closed, It was a Golf one from GHS. The closed piston will reduce the performance considerably if it isn't the correct one.

 

Why not just remove the cylinder - it is a pretty quick job!

the piston and barrel are out of it i will take a picture as i think the wrong pistons been fitted

Yes, the open ported saws in that "family" was the 42 and the 246.

There is no reason why a windowed piston will not work in an open ported cylinder, but does not work the other way round (windowed cylinder with non windowed piston )

I looked up an old and a new IPL for the 42 and for the 242. The illustrations all show a windowed piston, but the part numbers are different.

Of course the illustations could be "generic" for the model family, so it may not really tell anything.
