Im guessing that because the time of year thats how it looks , earlier on when the damage is fresh its more obvious but as the season goes on the leaves die off , either that or old mate over the road has been putting to much salt down on the road for the winter snow.

only noticed it couple months ago,not spring.and yeh there mainly street trees..

yeah still sounds like leaf miner , its a big problem here mate , we set up traps to catch the moths , if your seeing it on a lot of the chestnuts around there it will be the leaf miner bro. although the pics do look like drought damage i reckon that it would be an isolated case if that was the matter and not spread out over the city.

Leaves are falling off everywhere ATM . I'm putting it down to drought stress ..

That isn't leaf miner, leaf miner is random across the leaf, this is from tip-inwards, so it's dying back, it's probably due to the fact that through June and July we didn't really have any rain, and when we did it was run-off

I agree with some of the other posts. That looks nothing like leaf miner. Looks more like Guignardia but don't think its that either, no yellow banding around the damage.
