While on the subject of spikes what to most of you prefer gaff wise?

The long ones or the shorties.

I have only ever used the short pole gaffs and cant get used to the proper tree gaffs, seems like I am just balancing on nothing to me.

" horses for courses" having a well stocked tool box!! is a must in this industry.

As i said i carry both ....the short ones i use most of the time but they will kick out on thick (lose) barked tree then i change to the long gaffs.

And yes the long ones feel like your balancing on nothing ( like wearing high heels for the first time?) especially on the smaller diameter stuff.

Some Eucs start out thick barked and go down to smooth ...so some times i get the spikes sent up to me.Or put up with some slipping and kicking out till i get high enough.

That reminds me of seeing a guy climb a big dead Euc by driving in bridge spikes to make foot and hand holds. It was in the back corner of a property and he managed to smash each of the four paling fences.

He survived:001_smile:

I remember thinking that there has to be a better way of doing this!
