Has anyone got a speed control rather than stepped pulleys.

I'm toying with the idea of getting a new 3 phase motor and phase convertor with speed control and do away with stepped pulleys.

Problem is to speed control a motor, it either has to be a dc motor, one that runs on brushes or 3 phase with the convertor.

A motor and convertor runs at £200

Then I need a chuck and plates another £200

That'll be £600

I'm going to have to sell a lot of bowls to get mi brass back :001_smile:

Mines on stepped pulleys it only takes 10seconds to change it up a gear, maybe later down the line i'll upgrade but at the mo it does the job well. I would get a decent chuck and tools over been quicker to change gear. :001_smile:

Ive got a record CL4 variable speed and sorry but variable speed makes turning so much more of a pleasure. If you get a vibration when the wood is not in balance, you can easily adjust the speed up or down to remove it instantly. I would never go back to a pulley system.

I can put photo up later if anyones interested?

I use mine mostly for bowl turning of anything from 2" to 24" in diameter.

Thanks,

H.

Ian, what jaws to I need for the patriot chuck, I want to turn mainly big bowls..

I've sussed the thread size is 1" x 10 tpi so I'll need a left and right hand thread.

Or shall I just use backplates for now ?? :001_smile:

I have the 1" pin jaws which i have a 1" forsner bit to drill down an " the jaws fit into the hole open them out to grip the wood (outside of bowl and spiggot turned). Then 35mm jaws to hold spiggot and balance rest of bowl and finish.

The bowl reversing jaws are to finish bottom of bowl(taking spiggot off).

The backplates can do the job of the pin jaws but i find them useful for smaller stuff too. The bowl reversing jaws can take bowls up to 9"max 2"min.

I have a list of all the jaws you can get with internal and external dimensions if you want i'll post.

Thats not a bad price for the chuck there. Where did you get it?

When time allows Id get some more backing jaws as I managed to loose a fair number of screws as I was always chaning between jaws.
