Do I, dont I ?

After getting this 201t for a silly price used it for the first time today and even with a couple of tweaks I dont think it's fantastic neither did my boss.

Im now debating if I should sell the 201 and my 1995 020 which I was given for my birthday (as a fixer upper of course)

to pay for a t540?

I mean both stihls have to be worth at least £250 a piece.

The only thing that worrys me is the amount of people saying that theirs are falling apart, but there are the odd one or two people that say, theirs are fine?

What do I do!! Bearing in mind if I do get one it will be the first brand spanking new saw that I will have bought.

Hope you guys can give me a bit of advice.

Once again thanks in advance

Thanks for the quick reply, so far I tweaked the 201 by drilling out the h speed screw limiter, muff mod and advanced the timing by shaving a third off the flywheel key (following brad snellings guide on arboristsite)

Throttle response was awsome after that but still seemed guttless full bar length (12" ) in some lime this afternoon

Was that an 020t or a bog standard 020 rear handled saw? If it was the former keep that and get that going again, a stonking saw and in my opinion the best top handle saw there ever was.

The MS201 is ok; I've not played about with the exhaust as has been suggested. I also own a T540 and my guys generally like that more but if anything goes wrong with it, it tends to be a trip to the service department.

Not sure if that helps at all?

Its an 020t also muff modded and liquid gasket on the cylinder and while its a great saw, it can be temperamental on some days (not idling or stalling after making a long cut) but most of the time its great :) just never owned a brand new saw which I think is whats tempting me

Just talking to the service guys at my local shop (a very reliable one) and they recon they've had shed loads old 201s in for constant repair, and virtually all the huskies due to flimsy bits breaking - and they are a pig to work on apparently.

Their suggestion is to keep ms200s alive, rebuild as and when necessary. You still have a decent saw for less than the cost of the new 'less well built' products.

That is the opinion of the guys who work on the saws, the shop owner may well have a different view.

I think these threads will run and run till Stihl and Husky sort out their products.

I have 3 running ms200s and one for spares. Theres no point in cashing in on the silly ebay prices if you can't replace them with something better.

I have a t540xp, its only had a couple of tanks of fuel so far and is running 14 inches of bar.

I am mixed on my opinion of it so far, its got a lot of guts when the chain is perfectly sharp................but, its cheap build quality left me wondering if I had purchased a fake saw, its that flimsy!

It needs choke to start, after anything more than 3-4 mins of non use.

The bar feels cheap, will be replaced if sugihara ever release a bar for it:001_rolleyes:.

Chain tension is tricky to obtain. my stihl combi can wont fit it:sneaky2:

Not used the ms201t, but wish I had found a decent ms200t and had it overhauled. I would even toy with the echo topper if new was the way to go.

Sold my perfectly good ms200t to get a T540 . ( We also had a new 201t which was gutless and slow to pick up ) I was made up with the T540 initially . Strong engine in a Caburys chassis . Wish I had kept the 200t now .
