hears a twist on the thread............ what do you see the role of a method statment for arb operations is????

The method statements we have used in the past are more about the different phases of a job and the different processes and services required to completle a job rather than the actual method of work..

For example, a method statement for railway de-veg shows where we start, what the spec of the job is and what cearance is required, through different sections of the line and which sections will be done on night shift and which require climbers etc

To me a method statement is a statement of the obvious...

 

If you have undergone training and attained qualifications I think it is an insult to your intellingence.

 

I thorough site briefing / meeting prior to works commencing should suffice in my veiw

Quite agree in our case looking at job, pricing and carrying out are all done by the same person, so not really necessary for written MS unless requested of course.

I guess an important role of a method statement is so that arboricultural works can be planned around other site works. Especially with development, a foreman should be able to work out where contractors will be working and for how long, hopefully avoiding problems with other trades.

 

For complex operations method statement can clarify excacty how works will proceed and who will undertake what role. Crane work springs to mind, especially if you have a crane operator who may or may not have experience with tree work

 

A breif method statement for domestic works can help clarify in a clients mind how excatly a large or tricky job is going to be done. I know from experience with very tricky jobs a method statement can add the extra degree of reassurance to your quote.

I think all that can be covered by a verbal briefing, half of the stuff written down on method statements is pure and simply common sense.

 

MS for domestic works ? Are you saying you send in a method statement with each quote.

 

To me, the reassurance comes from your meeting with the client and how you put yourself across, not in a method statement

 

If a crane driver has little tree experience I would get to the job early and spend a good slot of time running through everything on the ground from what signals you'll be using to how you operate within the tree.

NGR - national grid reference/OS grid reference etc, we have to have it on all job specific paperwork.

I should say it's a fine statement for a construction company or a management firm, but a management firm shouldnt really require a method statement from you as it's part of their job to 'manage' that side of things..

 

Have you used the statement for the FC or any LA work??

 

 

Havent worked for the FC and any LA work is not direct with LA goes through about 3 other companies first, as per usual

Method statement to explain in writing what work you are carrying out, where you are doing it and how you are doing it.

 

Dean, the reason people want method statements on paper is so that if you do something different ie say you are going to use a MEWP then dont in practice, they can give you a right good slapping if something goes wrong. Arse covering comes to mind

 

Besides I may look at a site 2 or 3 times and explain what I am doing to 2 or 3 different people then by the time I do the job someone else is there asking for the method statement!

 

Also if the HSE come on site they will want to know what people are 'supposed' to be doing and can then check to see if it matches up with 'what' they are doing.

 

Last thing, because it has a brief description of the job they can check that you are hacking down what you are supposed to be, a lot of site managers dont get to see the quote therefore some dont know what is going on.

 

I may be wrong on all the above so dont take my word for it
