Thanks for the replies, we are planning to plant hazel to coppice about a acre a year . Its a seven acre wood which is predominately ash , so its ideal for growing a coppice crop but also ideal for nettles and brambles . I'm just concerned about the competition on the new plants .

Nettles will totally swamp the growth so you need to spray a reasonable area around them before they are established. I did about an acre in my wood like this last year. You will never kill all the nettles even if you tried, but I agree about leaving some nettles growing. Ultimately shading them out is the best solution.
