Either Scott's ReAct or Dow Blaster, the latter is approved for use in SSSI woodlands by Natural England

Cut them down before they seed. Then as they start to regrow in a month, use glyphosate but very locally. Will get rid of them easily and cheaply without killing much else.

Thanks for the replies, we are planning to plant hazel to coppice about a acre a year . Its a seven acre wood which is predominately ash , so its ideal for growing a coppice crop but also ideal for nettles and brambles . I'm just concerned about the competition on the new plants .

Don't do it. They are native woodland plants and extremely import for insects within the local ecosystem. You could strim around the stools to reduce competition. The presence of the nettles would suggest high levels of nitrate so the growth of stool should be good.

Nettles will totally swamp the growth so you need to spray a reasonable area around them before they are established. I did about an acre in my wood like this last year. You will never kill all the nettles even if you tried, but I agree about leaving some nettles growing. Ultimately shading them out is the best solution.
