Currently out in the Alps,

A lot of thinning in the woods is going on and I've been observing some of the cuts (learning and that) and they've done this cut which I've never seen before.

It's a normal cut but the back of the cut has a triangle cut out the back of it.

Sorry if it's not a great description I'll try get picture if I can.

Have you seen them do it or have you just seen the stumps?

Sounds to me like its a space cut out for a bottle jack to push over back leaners.

Sounds exactly like that. Quite common here too, especially out west.

What's the best felling cut to use on a fat hollow conifer?

A box cut?

Something about more flex area in the face of both sides allows it to hold onto the stump longer?

I'm working for Drift Riding Holidays as their Photographer,

I've just seen the the stumps, but Joe that sounds about right for the cut, they're all on slopes so that'd make sense.

I wish I was working out here doing tree work, be loads of fun
