We never climb without another competent on site together with a second set of kit, but then we’re L/A. We also never use a saw or chipper if lone-working and if there are two operatives and only one with first-aid – the one without first-aid uses the saw (can be difficult to administer first-aid on your-self).

One of the things the industry is up against is quoting to get the job and competeing against cowboys / pikies whatever you want to call them.

 

If I quoted for a second climber on every domestic job I would not have a business. It's easy for people to critisise until they are in the same situation and not working for LA or someone else or indeed have second jobs and not rely on tree work primarlily

HOW OFTEN is the guy with the ticket just there so the legislation is complied with???

we just set a lad on with his rescue ticket

He will not be in a position where he is the rescuer until he has recieved further training and proved himself capable

I have got a groundy and he IS booked in at Askem Bryan in Sept..

 

But alas there is the ignorance I speak of, I have gone through countless groundies to eventually find one that:

 

a: Has stuck the job out long enough to trust him not to scarper with his qualifications

 

b: shown the aptitude neccessary

 

c: Is interested enough to not be wasting my time and money.

 

You cannot just immediately send every employee on a course, that would be ludricrous.

 

Putting the time and effort in to train him is more than just a couple of days down in the wood. My groundy starts by learning from a to z not from m to z.

 

He starts by doing groundwork first, learning about the chipper, fueling and maintaining saws, rope clearance work, knots, lowering etc etc etc.

 

I am no way going to train up someone to climb a tree and perform a rescue in a life or death situation before he has even learnt to tie a knot, feed the chipper or sharpen a saw.

i am also self employed and always have a trained climber

and yes i do pay him more than a unqualified groundie

and yes i am trying to compete against everyone else

the rescue climber is there for ME not HSE:mad1:

im still in disbelief on most days we have 3 experianced climbers 1 newly trained one and a lad who can use the gear but hasnt done his tickets yet pluss groundies

 

i dont see how people cant find staff and why they cant at least train the staff they do have even if they just teach them their self that way you might have a better chance if the worst happened

 

also just a small point which was mentioned yesterday on a cs38 39 assesment it may be neccesary for the rescuer to help paramedics to get up a tree to stabalise the casualty until they could be safely removed from the tree i.e. if there was a spinal injury

 

how do you do that without the correct staff on site?

 

get a subby in? hi mate got an afternoons work for you if you want it bring your rescue stuff?????????

We always have a qualified climber when working. The philosophy at our place though is that eveyone should be able to do everything that everyone else can do!! works quite well but does cost alot on training. If someones sick or on holiday though the work carries on regardless.

dont be rediculous a choice of those people every day spread over all the jobs to do

 

that way we are far more flexible
