equipement and gadgets only assist you. i worry now that climbing is focused on more than the skill of cutting. climbing and mewps only get you to where you need to be.

spot on chap, i was having this conversation this morning when discussing internodal cutting etc in relation to reductions, ok bit high brow, but very very important.

the kit and methods of modern climbing are very impresive and aid climing and its ergonomics enormosly, but at the en of the day you still need to understand the tree, be able to read what its telling you and know the technical aspects of what to do when you cut.

like alex shigo said to know them you need to touch them.

cheers

please feel free to start a thread about this kev, i have been doing trees locally from since i was about 14, from the good old days of a bmx and a bushman to what i do now. i see pruning cuts that i thought were text book now rotten cavities from 10 years ago and horrible nugy cuts as a boy that have heeled amazingly to the point where the tree has covered the whole thing up(beech) sometimes i think leaving a little peg is safer in the long run, although it has been drummed into us that it is unsightly:confused1::001_smile:

It seems to me theres too much focus on legislation, what we should and shouldn't have, climber this , kit that .... perhaps more focus should be put on learning about trees how they work and more importantly, how to do a pruning cut, because there seems to be a hell of a lot of tree teams out there with all the kit and billy the rescue climber that will quite happily climb a tree ever so safely and then proceed to hack the hell out of it :mad1:
