Which saw?

I am looking for a new saw. So far I have been using cheep ones.

The first one I bought was a Mc'cullock with a 14" bar (about £145). Have had it for 6 years & its done a great job. Its light vibration free & easy to handle but could do with more power.

I then bought a cheep Husky copy (I know its crap but for the amount of use I give it its ok & it was only £85 inc del & I got the VAT back). Its heavy & uncomfortable to use but does have power & a 22" bar.

 

Both still work ok but the Mc needs a new clutch, bar, drive cog (its had all of that bar the cog once already plus a new set of antivibe mounts) plus all the screw holes are starting to wear & loosen. I tend to use the Mc unless it just wont do the job as its much nicer to use.

My use is for felling trees up to about 24" plus cutting up into firewood on the floor & on a saw horse. I dont climb / do disasembles so dont need a top handled saw.

 

I dont have any brand loyalty or any preference on make just that it should be light, powerfull, low vib, easy to maintain, reliable, value for money & not to costly.

Stihl or Husqvarna. End of story. Hunt around for a dealer and price you like, and choose whether you prefer orange and white or all orange. There really is no other choice imo. If you look around arbtalk there will be endless stihl vs husky debates. I prefer stihl, others prefer husky. Agree with both comments, big joe is right though.......MS280 is a good all rounder or go for a 341 if you want something with a bit more go.

I thought they were good too?

 

A quick google tells me that both the MS280i & the MS341 are out of my budget at just under £480 ish. Oddly the sellers have the 341 listed at 48-59cc dep on which site you look at.

 

I was hoping to be spending less than that as this in not my work or employment or money earner so funds are tight.

dolmar = makita (i think)=fast revvy saw. Not bad, but i think they dont last forever like the 'big2'. My mate has 25 years in tree work and his every day saws have been the smallest saws that stihl make, only designed for domestic work, now called ms181 i think. He swears by them. Spend as much as you can afford and you shouldn't go wrong. Jonesie does a ms171 with 12" bar for around the 150 mark for example.

Yeah, I'd always go for stihl if it really mattered but I've got a Makita too which for the price is a winner. Or what about a Jonsered?

for all round work i think you would love a stihl ms460 loads of power and quite light (well light enough to do tree work comfortably) with inter changeable bars, i love mine for ground work and it would make mince meat of anything up to 30"

i've just read ypur first post properly, and realised youll be felling upto 24" and the 440 would be the perfect saw for this, but with a 25" bar, it has excellent power to weight, fuel consumption and vibes

A MS260 will serve you well.

 

No point getting a bigger saw at more cost, just use an 18" bar and double cut any big stuff.

 

If you were wanting a daily use saw then id sudgest the 441 or 460 but these are out the budget.
