What GVW Arb Truck

what ive never understood is why dont people have a isuzu grafter/ mitsubishi canter etc with a beavertail alu body and have a tracked chipper on that and tow a tt105 behind? large chip and weight carrier in the trailer and the payload on the truck should carry a tracked chipper legally? or not that easy???

 

A trailer like that is going to have a payload of 2-2.5 ton so good for about 6/7 cubic yard of chip max which with a good chipper will be full within the hour . You are then driving around the countryside to empty it while your team are scratching their bodybits. A decent sized truck would probably stay put all day which makes for a far more productive team.

We run a 6 ton iveco, 3.5 ton izusu, and 130 Land rover. I don't know how anyone runs a business with a LR as their main vehicle. I love mine and is invaluable when you need it..

 

With two tucks on site you can send someone to tip while filling the other and tow a big trailer and chipper to site. Logs and chip are also kept separate.

 

Multiple vehicles also mean you can work (if not quite as efficiently) when your truck is in the garage etc..

I had Unimog for these reasons. I also chose a Mog to avoid O license and HGV for younger staff.

HOWEVER, it was too expensive to run for my type of work and I should have got a 16t truck with tow along chipper.

Unimog type vehicle is great but it is very specialist due to the running costs.

As Aspenarb previously said, The money is made by being able to remove the waste fast.

That's why more people are kitting up with Arb Trolleys, Mini skid steers etc.

 

I recently did a large tree removal. I factored in two days with my 8" chipper so I hired a 12" chipper and got the chipping done in a day. The only thing that let us down was four loads of chips in the Transit! That meant one man off site which equated to 1hr 40mins driving and the loss of his production on site whilst he was driving.

Old Mill, good post. I just think the risk of being caught out running a mog as ag and on red is too high. The advantages of running it as a lorry aren't great enough. I think if I need the all out versatility of a mog I'd get a tractor - it would open up other work for me here.

 

However, I would love a mog, just to have one😁

If you want a full size 2 axle lorry get an 18 tonner, the footprint and turning circle will be the same from 14-18 tonnes, you just get more payload. If you want a crane then definitely get an 18 tonner.

 

If you want something smaller but more useful than a 7.5 tonne then look at 10-12 tonne, similar size but more payload.

 

I run 18 tonne with rear mount palfinger crane and rotating grapple, and side tip chip box that holds 20 cubic metres. I rarely need to tip off during the day. As for getting the truck to the tree, I park on the road and use the mini loader to bring the tree to the chipper.

I reckon that set up is bang on the middle of the road and would take some beating. With a rear mounted crane you can probably reach into the odd places the truck wont fit. I also believe the mini loader is a must have to compliment the truck , there is not much point in having the capacity of a bigger truck if you have to handball everything on in smaller pieces. Also not touched on is the return you will get by taking out as much as possible as cord. Cut up and stacked 2.5 - 3 mts lengths of anything including conifer will get you a return which has to be better than stuffing it through a chipper or paying to get shot of it at a green waste station .

Peters setup is very cool,

 

However surely a deere 6430 or any other compact 120-140hp tractor would be best for you as you say all the work is rural and out of the way of vosa/police.

 

Pull a 14-16ton grain trailer with silage sides (or a smaller trailer if access is an issue), which you will need a 6 inch chipper running flat out to fill in a day. Plus you could stick a 3pt link crane on the drawbar to load logs and bags of rakings.

 

A lot of this size of tractor come with front links and pto so you could mount a pto chipper to the front and just run a 4x4 to carry the saws and gear to site

 

Also the offroad ability of a proper tractor will be vastly better than any 4x4 lorry

Useful info coming in here. I'll be quick as I'm a bit busy. I like the sound of you're set up Peter, how much more difficult is it to make a 3 way tipper rather than a normal tipper.

 

Jonny, you're a bad man, its tsken me ages to cone to terms with the fact I dont need a tractor! Still would like one though :)
