Anyone considered making something like the GRCS?

At risk of being shot down...I was just wondering if anyone had considered making something like the GRCS? its a great tool but at an astounding price of nearly £2500 it seems a little expensive. I was looking recently and you can get a 2 speed self tailing boat winch for around 500 ( two speed self tailing sailboat winches - Google Search ) and im sure it wouldn't take much to fab up a plate to mount it for use. Not too much criticism please as it is only a thought haha

Doesn't sound a bad idea, would need to look into it more though before I tried it. :-)

Plenty of people have fabricated their own devices with Harken or similar winches.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thats thought about it haha. The idea crossed my mind cause of cost more than anything, if making yourself you could have a serious bit of rigging kit for under a grand. I'm asuming the boat winches are the same thing as the GRCS winch?

I have made a few, be careful with your winch choice, and be very careful to get the rope guide hooks to be perfectly aligned.

So if I were to have one fabricated is there any way of getting it certified?

Probably not without spending a lot more money than it would cost to just buy a ready made one in the first place
