I had a call out to see what the delightful yout' in my Borough had been up to after a few too many alcopops yesterday, bless 'em:

You can't really see from the photos, but the whole of the base of the tree and several of the big buttress roots have been hollowed out to well below ground level with succesive fires - this is only the most recent one .

It's a stonking great tree that has got some seriously large lumps of wood in the crown, a large wound at the crown break from a torn out leader and lots of smaller areas of necrotic bark and / or decay.

I'm going to keep a check on the foliage over the next few days to see if there has been any major damage to the sap wood layer and also see about getting some of the top weight taken out, if the multiple bird holes look unoccupied and there are not signs of bats.

What a sad fate for a grand old veteran

My money's on the Tree.

Reduction & mulch.

Get the powers that be, to dig in their pockets for this asset.

Blinkin Kids

What's wrong them these days.

T'was a time when the adrenalin of escaping from the owner of the Orchard, whilst a'scrumpin, was excitement enough.

What is the drive to destroy all about?

This old Beech has been set afire more times than I care to remember, have been up to the top of the trunk with a hose to put it in a cavity to put it out.

Aswell as having to rebuild it's canopy after '87, it's still thriving

Resiliant buggers :001_smile:

Low intelligence IMO.

Shame about the tree, but im sure with the proper care it will survive for a good while longer.

i am surprised that the tree is still standing, all the fire damaged/trees on fire still, i have been called to over the years i have had to fell on the grounds that the firemen cannot attend the same fire twice therfore i have always been instruted to fell and cut open so they can be 100% sure the fire is out. nice to see it still up.

Jeeees Dave, you lot need to sharpen ya saws or stop using an Axe in the tree, some of those cuts are real rough, looks like lofty's ripped em off with his landie:001_tongue:

Amasing fire damage, just shows what sort of punishment trees can take!

How very dare you, if indeed I ever do contemplate extending my technique range for fracture pruning, I would be sure to use a proper vehicular pulling force :001_tongue:

im just working in the bush fire areas at the minute and it is incredible how much they can take and what comes back, im gob smasked all the time.

its also weird what we are felling well not weird just some huge trees coming down and doing some massive fells of150ft plus but the regrowth is awesome but here it is different because the regenerate in the fires but yer fire damage is unreal, makes ya clothes pretty manky too.

ill get some photos on here next week im heading up to the worst area for some fells so so ill get the carnage on here
