Makes sense, i reckon 30mph is ave speed door to door for a car (based on 250 thou on the Galaxy when we were still running to the Continent on hols)

I thought perhaps you were referring to ex hire gensets, I did not realize stand-by sets were changed at such low hours AND low years.

Will re-focus my search.

Anyway not rushing, rather get the Mill set up before I locate the genny.

Hmmm?, with a canopied/enclosed/silent genset, I could rig the whole shebang on a tractor drawn trailer chassis, and still be mobile.:thumbup::lol:

Standbys get changed due to liquidation. Suddenly undersize for load, application so critical cant trust a 15 year old set. A canopied modernish 100kva should weigh under 2000kg so could put on plant trailer behind 4x4.

 

That 200kva rolls in the auction pic will probably weigh 4-5 tonnes. I collected a 70kva open Dorman once and it was too heavy to tow.

 

Hire sets are a lucky dip and you never know how many hours they have done the clocks often pack up after a few thousand hours so could be on its 5 th clock.

Imo the old Dormans were awful and rolls not much better. The parts are now getting difficult and expensive. A 40 year old 125kva c6 rolls will scoff £15 an hour in diesel. A mid nineties perkins phaser £6

 

We find 40yr old standby sets are a night mare we give £500 and allow £1000 for hiab and transport. Send them to auction they make £1500 - £3000

 

If you service an old set and put it to work within a year the avr, windings, crg alt, water pump, piston liners and radiator will have failed.

 

You want a 10-15 year old silent set with 200 hrs on the clock.

 

Up to 15,000 hrs is ok if its been looked after. We often see sets with a new main Alternator after 7000 hrs. we used to get 40,000 hrs out of some of our 3152 and 6354 but skip a few oil changes and leave it running on light load and they were stuffed at 15,000 hrs

Only ever worked on one about 20 years ago. I would say well made and too expensive in their day for standby use. Built for high hours in the back of buses and coaches. Good engine but very old now if you get a good one should be plenty of mechanics who can work on them.

Parts available for Gardiners too, per a couple of links I saw and clicked on somewhere(might even have been via Wikipedia?)

Was that the gardiner powered genset on ebay, plumbed off a large static diesel tank if I recall the advert.

tempting, due to the revered Gardiner engine, but I wisnay brave enough.

Anyway, due to my absolute zero 3ph exp/knowledge.

I need a set with a reasonably modern and fully functioning control panel.

I imagine.

Awaiting del of mill, Mon or Tue. Almost got the site cleared of 5 years accumulation of scrap timber and other rubbish. After a day spent fettling my dog-rough tractor forklift.

Steve, where do all those sensible priced gensets go/dissappear to, all I seem to be able to find is high hours or wildly optimistically priced stuff.

The Paxman(who were bought over by MAN) engined Ex BT set running at 1000rpm, oh dribble an drool, the SIZE of the alternator on that lump.

I think there is a good market for low tech well made 20 year old sets in Africa with no electronics. That leaves the really old over made heavy on fuel stuff or need a laptop to start it stuff.

 

Dont bother looking on ebay especially now you can advertise for twice the value 20 items a month with no reserve fee set up.

 

Any Alternator made before 1973 or not modern standard we dont bother to visit. So avoid the big seperately excited dinasaurs.

 

The control panels are less of a problem its fairly straight forward to put a basic key start module on any set with protections for low oil and over temp.

 

We sell new kit as its good value for money compared with second hand value plus thousands when it throws a shoe.

 

Keep it under 25 years and you are in with a chance if it breaks.

 

Budget to spend at least 6k and it will be worth the same in a few years or u will buy junk and throw a few more thousand at it and it will still be worthless.
