Hi, I haven't found any recent threads on doing bat surveys, but I understand the training is out there, even for those without ecology degrees.

I know it can be difficult to get into as (it seems) it's a who knows who type industry.

It's something I've been interested in getting into, but haven't known where to go. Also, I need to pay the bills, so voluntary work is generally kept to a minimum.

Any thoughts or direction?

I'm in the southwest, by the way.

Thanks

Vast area, so it depends what you're after?

If it's just current knowledge and basic survey techniques, get yourself on one of the AA or BCT courses.

If you want to be licensed one day, join your local bat group, put the time in, study the books, get out there and study the species. There's a lot you can learn with a bat detector and some spare time.

It's not easy and can sometimes be lonely, but it's a fascinating subject that still excites me after 13 years! Been licensed for 7 of those.

Drop me a pm if there's anything specific you want to know.

I know it will take a few courses and a lot of training with my local bat group, but hopefully worth it
