Trees REALLY do bleed!

Cut down a Eucalyptus and an hour later noticed this oozing out.

It's bright red and looks just like blood.

I've never seen anything like it.

Any ideas?

It's sap mate, we have a lot of fun with that stuff over here! Can really make people panic when your up the top of a spar and rub this on your arm and start screaming. The new guy actually didn't find it very funny!

Very sticky and it's a pain to get off your gear and clothes. It will harden soon and will look like a lolly or sweet.

the reddish clolour is possibly Anthocyanin pigmentation in the sap

 

I think Anthocyanin provides defence against environmental stresses like UV and cold

The strangest thing is that it was only in one small part of the tree, about 2ft.

Really common in eucs but I have also found it in metrosideros exclesia. Its pretty dramatic if your not expecting it
