From a ex mechanic... If you do get a new box get a new clutch even if it dosent need doing there should be no labour cost for this as it's been removed anyway (don't forget too get slave cylinder done too!) the labour cost for fitting a new box should also be very similar too just getting a new clutch (add 2 hours really)

you can have two machines new treat them the same one will do 200k no problems the other will fail after a few months you only need one badly made part to put a box down early. I used to but a new transit every 3 years then I got one so bad I would not take a chance on another ford ever again. Toyota make a good product but even they can have their moments and the parts are expensive.

Rangers are great from my experience and I have previously had a hilux. I bought my one with 80k on the clock and it's now done another hard 90k still on same engine, clutch gearbox etc etc just normal consumables changed and serviced by myself each year. Just one of those things it seems for you, a bad egg. Hope you can get it sorted at a good price.
