Section felled this sycamore pole today and this happened? Any clues?

My thoughts are that it had something to do with the tree having weight stress on one side creating torsion ?

I've had this on Ash a few times, after cutting a section off and getting ready to do teh enxt one then suddenly there's a bang and a crack appears. Or it could be the start of a downward barbers chair because the hinge is close to the middle of the stem. Was the piece you just remoived pretty big and did it have a gnarly bit in it?

It's a bit of shake, usually happens when the tree has had a lean or been at outsider!

Can certainly make you stop and think when you hear it crack !!

Made me think enough to take a photo!!!! :-)

If your felling Ash or Sycamore for the saw mill, its very important to leave it in as long a lengths as you can, cut it short and it could well "bang", which would seriously de value the timber.
