I love those old films. I've a picture somewhere of my Grandad as a young man felling by hand before the first world war. My Uncle set hisself up in business with a pushbike, felling axe and single cross cut and set off to clearfell 27 acres of Poplar a mere seven miles from home! Another Uncle died from injuries after falling out the cab of Chev Quad gun tractor that he converted to a timber crane in the late '50s.

Argh! the days before HSE, when men worked hard for fun, drank bitter, smoked fags and ate beef dripping sandwiches all without complaining.

I was talking to an old faller yesterday, he started out on the axe and crosscut gear, then when the 1st chainsaws came in they loved it. Even tho they had to move the timber to the saw cos it was easier than carrying the saw along the butts! I asked him if, back then, they could see a future for these monster saws, and he said they had to, it was so much more productive, and meant you had the energy to work the Saturday to top your wage up to 25 quid a week!!
