Hi Everyone

i am looking into starting my own woodland managment company , does anyone have any hints or tips apart from the obv "dont do it" lol

For any business you really need one thing - paying customers.

Have you got any lined up? In my first business I got sidetracked by dozens of other things and lost sight of the this. Keeping focused is the best tip I can offer.

Priority number one :- what are you going to do and whos going to give you ££££ for doing it. Know your market and then go for it.....

Limited co dead easy to set up - dont use solicitor get cheapest off google - a limited company will save you from robbing astards who will try to take you at some point

Find someone good to do your legal stuff - terms and conditions, health n safety etc - not having this 100% can cost you thousands, Ask around there are guys working from home who can do this well and economically

Get a good file for every invoice you get, never never buy summat without an invoice, they are the same as pound notes, and keep them safe

Dont give credit if you can possibly avoid it, i made this mistake with my first business and had to go to court with 24 companies to get my ££££ ....its a huge cost and time waster so dodge that bullet ......cash up front please

Worst customer isn't time waster who doesn't give you the job, its the astard who gives it you then doesn't pay.....

Good luck

thats a can of worms to open ,,,

overheads costs, equipment profile what you've got & what you'll need , contacts & customers, infrastructure needs inc office IT support stuff, storage parking, staff ,insurance, how much £ you need to earn and what your realistically going too as the short fall will hurt badly,

dont spend what you earn in the good times untill you know how bad the tough times are,

My advice would be to specialise in one area of woodland management specifically, to start off with at least. Too many guys make the mistake of starting as a tree surgeon, and add gardening to their leaflet...and lawn mowing... and decks and patios. There are enough tools and skills required to do the first job well, the huge array of equipment to be capable as a jack of all trades usually leaves said businessman as a master of none.

If you are looking at a more practical side of woodland management, perhaps start off in a niche that you think you can get regular work in, get the specialist tools, and then expand from there. For example, offer a hazel harvesting service. Continue working for someone, even part time, while you build up your services, reputation and finances.

As a more academic/consultancy oriented example, you could start a surveying service, invest in some mapping software and GPS tools, and start with that. Rather than spending money on a big 'we do all woodland management' website, renting an office, a nice chair, a fancy tablet, and twiddling your thumbs while you wait for your first call. It sounds stupid, but there are too many people that take this approach!

Not trying to be funny, but do you know anything about forestry and woodland management and have you had any experience of forestry work, if you do that's great, send me a pm and I may be able to help you.
