Friction knots binding...

having issues with friction knots. My prusik has the middle loop tightening too much and grabbing the top turn, making it almost impossible to lower on it.

So tried another knot, the VT, and having exactly the same issue...

 

Was thinking a thicker, stiffer rope for the job, so tied up with a thicker rope, but to no avail...

 

Any ideas?

Vt , distel etc will need tweeking every so often but the prussic shouldnt really once it has bound into the mainline . Could try a blakes hitch , same dia as your climbing line and once it binds into your mainline will never need tended , excellent knot .

Or two down three up prussic. I use that when I just need a quick knot. (About 260-270 pounds with gear on a 1/2 rope [sorry not in metrics].)

Have you climbed on any Connie's recently? If so you might have sap of ya rope!

Get it all the time. Either swap ends on ya rope, or bash it in the washing machine with some old towels or something.

Failing that maybe try different friction cord?

Smaller diameter friction cords would bind easier and too thick wont grab so well. Trial and error

At least it should be thinner than your main line or how?

Thanks guys, tried a few more knots now, along with different cord thicknesses and think I can see the issue now...

As said, thin cord binds easier. What dia is your climbing line? What dia friction cord do you use?

 

A klemheist knot is a great alternative if you use a Prussik. Releases much easier.
