Recommend me a good chain...

Im after some advice on getting a new chain.

Basically for my ported husky 390 which gets used with a 24 or 28" 3/8 bar on 24+" stuff which can be fresh cut or seasoned timber, sometimes nearly stumping.

Now the saw is quite strong and at the mo wears Oregon 73 chain which cuts the fresh stuff like butter but when it comes to the seasoned hard oak I wander if a different chain would do any better? The saw doesn't struggle to pull but the chain just doesn't cut the mustard so to speak.

Im fully aware that seasoned oak is hard as nails and wont cut so well etc but as I need to order a new chain was wandering if theres a better choice available?

I would have though a full chisel chain would be your best bet.

I only know of semi or full chisel and the narrow kerf Oregon chains, for hardwoods I'd go with full chisel.

personally I find full chisel easy to sharpen and get good results for cutting hard and softwoods.

I think you can get skip chains which have less cutting teeth for longer bars but I'm sure one of the more experienced guys will be along to explain.

i asked the same question what chain for arbwaste for my solorex dynasaw and was recomended semi chisel as full chisel dulls quicker on crapy wood ie arbwaste as its been all over the floor dirt grit and was told its hold its edge better and easy to rub up with a file

I would rather sharpen a full chisel chain more often than struggle with a semi chisel

I agree that full chisel dulls quicker and needs a tickle more often, semi chisel defo holds edge better but cuts slower than full

It's so hard to get semi chisel big saw chains your stuck with full chisel really. Not a chisel fan really, much prefer the semi chisel to work with.

I have some Oregon ripping chain on my 660 at the moment sharpened to 30 degrees. Works really nicely with a nice curve radius on the work corner almost like a chipper chain.

I'm sure chainsawbars.co.uk have a custom chain area on their web site and you can select the type of chain you want along with pitch and number of drive links and they will make it up for you, there decent on price and fast delivery, I've bought quite a bit from them.
