Hi Steve,

like Spuds ideas:D

How about thumbs up & thumbs down or green/red arrow for post ranking?, with the ability to sort by ranking, it may help reduce frivolous posts, I dont know.

Perhaps the ability to add an icon: cool, troll, scull & cross bones etc

Or an ability for the thread starter to check something to say the post was helpful to their queery.

This may be controversial but Ill say it & be dammed, have you considered a paid level of membership Bronze read only Silver can post Gold post & access to special arbtalk areas with offers & foxy chics - for example?

All may be a bit server side intensive though

Good luck with the re-design

I used to use an unrelated forum with a "rep point" system. It became elitist, petty, and people in various cliques would +1 each other for agreeing with each other, and neg rep people with contradicting opinions to their own. I think it would be a terrible idea for Arbtalk.

Oh, I'd like all advertisers to have mandatory nudity in their logos.

I agree, rep systems are too open to abuse

No need to have bronze as read only- that only discourages new members from joining. Members who may have a lot to offer.

From browsing other forums, it appears that when 'sponsor' status is available, many people sign up anyway, even if the only perk is a badge under their name. If a forum provides value, people will give back. It may only be a few quid but hosting is not mega bucks and a few quid times a thousand members adds up.

I used another forum where negative rep is disabled. The result is a system that works well. If someone provides value/advice to Peter, then that rep point is deserved and counted, regardless of whether Paul thinks that poster is a knob. :thumbup1:

The like system i'm using will allow members to see how many likes any member has received, so more or less the same as the system you mention

If you mean displaying likes received under their username for all to see in every thread, then I think that is an excellent system that will work well.
