This was a Beech stump I was asked to look at recently, when I arrived I was amazed at the Ganoderma brackets, not sure if its applanatum or adspersum? I dont know how you tell them apart.

The tree was removed about 8 years ago.

Ganoderma must live off roots for years, these brackets had the fresh undersides with spores covering everywhere.

I think the stump is cool feature, so does the woman, her husband hates it.

They were concerned about fungi spreading, reclaiming the area for another feature etc.

The stump is still surprisingly solid for Beech even after all this time.

What do you reckon? leave or remove?

Leave, definately! it looks fantastic. I have just saved the top fork of an oak we just felled. It has some attractive cavity's, so I'm going to put it in my garden as a feature.

Definately talk them in to leaving it.

If not just for the natural interest of watching nature devour itself magnificently, what would the tree pixies play on in the wee hours !

Not sure on the id either, i think it can only truly be determined in a lab.

You got to get them to keep it!

you can't nip down the garden center and get another!

And if you do upset the tree pixies they may come and find you!
