How do you know? have you done tests?

 

Its funny how lots of fat people claim its down to "slow metabolism", but test have shown the fat actually have the fastest metabolisms.

 

Not had any official tests (though did have a blood test relating to it once), though have spoken to the GP about it in the past, and he seems to concur.

 

If I am completely sedentary for a sustained period (4 days or more), I find my metabolic rate returns to something approaching normal. Any physical activity causes not only an increased temporary calorific usage, but a sustained increased base metabolic rate. So for a period of a couple or three days, I will consume more food and produce considerably more heat, even when inactive. My body is just tremendously inefficient at day to day operation in this climate. I need to live in Lapland, though I suspect that might even be a bit warm!

One could eat porridge for breakfast. Plenty of carbs digested slowly. So instead of a sugar rush and hitting the wal an hour later, there's a prolonged release of energy. Also, take dried or moist apricots to work and have one now and then. They'll keep you going till grub-time.

 

I've a couple of friends, who at different times went on the 'Antarctic Survey' before skidoos and the like. After a long time out on the snow or if the supply ship couldn't get through, which wasn't unusual, they'd be down to desperate rations. And there'd be times where they'd be sat down, scoffing lard. Nothing with it... just lard. Not that lard was particularly tasty. But without it, just living even without the work, their bodies would be eating itself.

 

When the supply ship did eventually make it. The first thing to be opened, would be the boxes/tins of butter. Also, the favoured drink was gin, as gin has a very low freezing point. Wine was too bulky to transport and beer froze to easily, as did whiskey. Vodka wasn't too bad but neat gin is the thing in cold weather. A wine soiree with little things to eat are out. But lard washed down with gin, those were the parties to attend.

I'm 4000 to 5000 kcal a day usually. Only 2500 kcal so far today, though I haven't done that much. I have a high base metabolic rate (results in excessive heat production when physically active) and I'm tall and relatively heavy (6ft 8" and 100kg).

 

I'd say you'd need more than 2600kcal, but everyone is different.

wow!!!

 

i'm only on about 3000 and i thought i had too much. i too have a high metabolism but could work alot harder during the week. being 6'3" and 105 kilos i know i need to eat more that the recommended 2500.

 

i'm quite well built and like big j my calories seem to go on producing masses of heat and find it hard to work in the summer during the day.

 

i've heard that we burn half our calories on work or any physical activity and the rest goes on keeping us alive i.e. the functions of the body be it brain activity or having a pee.

There are some great smartphone apps that you can use to track your food intake, try doing it for a week and see what you actually eat rather than what you think you eat.

 

I can practically guarantee you aren't eating enough protein.
