Sharp hedgecutters n give it a hard trim, hammer that bloody laurel weed thing back-an all, should give you the result, don't like topping-had couple of TO arguements on that.

yew is fun stuff to cut back, the dead sticks are like cutting steel. we done a load of this where i work and it sure knocked the edge off chains.

 

photos show some during, and the size of hedges we did. All brash dragged out and burnt.
